Tips on rodent control
Tips on rodent control
For those who are troubled by rat infestations!
They chew on food, chew on electrical outlets, bring in mites...
We will introduce you to the ecology of rats as well as countermeasures and products.
Mouse is a general term for several families of mammals in the order Rodentia.
Mice's front teeth continue to grow throughout their lives, so they have the habit of constantly gnawing on hard objects to wear them down.
If they are left without something hard to chew, their front teeth will grow so long that they will block their mouth, making it impossible for food to enter the mouth and they will starve to death.
Mice are prolific breeders and live almost everywhere in the world. Mice can give birth to 6 to 8 pups at a time, and become sexually mature and able to give birth in just 3 to 4 weeks.
Most types of mice have distinctive features such as round ears, pointed noses, and long tails, making it difficult to tell them apart just by appearance.

- They are very cautious and difficult to trap. (Rat)
- Has a strong ability to adapt to the environment.
- High learning ability.
- Because they are nocturnal, their sensory organs, such as hearing, are well developed.
- Although his eyesight isn't very good, he can detect movement from a distance.
- They build nests and breed.
- They are highly fertile and are capable of breeding within 2-3 months of birth.
- They move around in the shadows and follow consistent paths.
- They have territories in groups.
- Eat anything that other people eat. (Omnivorous)
- They can fit through any hole of about 1.5 cm in size. Even if the hole is small, they will nibble around it to widen it and enter.
- Their incisors continue to grow throughout their lives, so they are always biting on hard foods.
- ※Rat sign
-
Evidence of the presence of rats is called "rat signs" and includes droppings, footprints, and paths.
Rats often pass through the same areas multiple times, causing their paths to become shiny black with dirt and oil.
Mice move around by urinating. Urine contains fluorescent substances, so when a black light is used in a dark place, new urine glows pale blue and old urine glows pale yellow, making it easier to find their path.
By finding rat signs, you can find the entry point and use rat poison (poison bait) and traps effectively.

Hygiene hazards
Rashes, headaches, and joint pain caused by rat-bites Food poisoning, dysentery, typhus, and Weil's disease caused by human waste Murine typhus caused by parasitic mites Plague and typhus caused by parasitic fleas Scrub typhus caused by parasitic scrub mites Discomfort and insomnia caused by bad odors and noise Feelings of uncleanliness due to things contaminated by rats
-
Economic harm
Household goods Clothing, furniture food Grains, vegetables, seafood, meat Crops Damage to seedlings and unharvested crops Afforestation They chew through tree roots and bark, causing damage to seedlings and trees. others They chew through pipes and wiring, causing gas leaks and electricity leaks, fires, power outages, and holes in levees, which can lead to floods. -

Invasion of predators such as snakes and weasels
Mice are broadly divided into house mice, which live in human dwellings, and field mice, which live in the mountains and fields. House mice include brown rats, which live in sewers, brown rats, which live in attics and buildings, and house mice, which live in warehouses and storerooms. (House mice are also classified as field mice.)

In order to reduce the number of rats, it is important to first create an environment that is difficult for them to live in.
-
Do not feed
Always store food in containers or cupboards, and put garbage in containers with lids.
Pet food and flower arrangements also provide food for mice.
If some of the food has already been eaten, place sticky sheets or repellents near the food or in the walkways. -
Not giving a home
Make sure not to bring in tissue paper, rags, plastic bags, etc., which can serve as nesting material for mice.
Futons, clothes, cardboard, etc. that have been left in the back of a closet for a long period of time can also become nest material. -
Block the passage
*If rats still appear despite taking measures, it is possible that new rats have invaded.
Install wire mesh over ventilation holes, drains, etc. that serve as passageways to prevent rats from entering.
If there are gaps or holes in the walls, seal them up.
If you have mice living around your home, they may get in through open doors or windows.
*If there are mice indoors and you block the entrance, they may appear in other locations.
* Moles may also use holes they have dug to enter.
- Use repellents (sprays, smoke bombs, etc.) to eradicate them (scientific and environmental eradication).
- Repellents are used to repel mice by using scents and ingredients that they dislike.
* Even if the repellent is effective after one use, it should be used several times to allow the rats to learn about it.
[ Spray type ]
Spray directly on mice to drive them away. There are also products that will keep mice away if you spray them in places where they are likely to appear. They are effective immediately, but last for a few days to a few weeks.
[ Installation type ]
Place it in places where mice are likely to appear or where there are nests, and keep them away with an odor that mice dislike. It is more effective than spray or smoke types. In well-ventilated places, the odor will diffuse and the effect will not be as pronounced.
[ Smoking type ]
The repellent is spread within the range of smoke and steam, so it is effective over a wide area and in gaps. When using, be careful not to let it come into contact with fire detectors, electronic devices, children's toys, pets, food, etc. It is fast-acting and the effect lasts for several days.
*When using repellents in combination with traps or poison bait, the repellent will adhere to them, so please remove them or move away from them before using again. *To prevent new rats from entering, it is effective to block the entrance and exit, place a long-lasting repellent, or use ultrasonic or electromagnetic repellent products in combination.

- Drive them away with ultrasonic waves and electromagnetic waves (environmental extermination).
-
Ultrasonic waves and electromagnetic waves are used to create a stressful space for the rats, causing them to move to another location.
Ultrasonic waves affect the room, while electromagnetic waves affect a wide area around the wiring behind the wall through the outlet. *Because of its characteristics of creating an unpleasant environment for mice, mice will not disappear immediately after installation. Similarly, it will take time for the effect to appear on mice that have just invaded. It is a long-term measure.
Also, if there is another place where it is more difficult for them to live or if there is an abundance of food, they may endure and continue to stay. The escaped rat may also move to another room. The effect may not be as noticeable for brown rats, which usually live outside the house, such as in the sewer, and only enter the house to catch food.
It is recommended to use this in combination with the above measures until you see results.
*The treatment may not be as effective on brown rats, which usually live outside the home in places like sewers and only invade to catch food.
*Ultrasound has the characteristic of bouncing off hard objects and being easily absorbed by soft objects.
The effect will be less noticeable on the opposite side of walls, furniture, curtains, sofas, etc.
In that case, please place multiple units so that they sandwich the obstructing object.

- Capture the rats (physical removal).
-
●Method using traps (cage traps): Use something that mice are accustomed to eating (such as food that has actually been used to cause damage) as bait, and set the trap in a place behind something near the mice's passageways or entrances.
*To allow the rat to become wary, do not move the trap for a few days, even if no rats are caught.
If you cannot place it in the shade, cover the trap with cardboard or newspaper to avoid interfering with the trap.
Method using adhesive sheet
The trick is to install as many adhesive sheets as possible, leaving no gaps.
(Some rats have high jumping ability and can jump over sticky sheets.)
Be sure to install them in areas where there are rat signs.
Mice are active when people are not around (sleeping), so it is effective to set up the trap before going out or before going to bed.
*Please check the capture status regularly.
If they are captured and left alone, they will rot, causing a bad odor and the breeding of mites.
The traps may become alarmed by the human smell, so please wear gloves when installing them.

- They are exterminated using poisonous bait (chemical extermination).
- Mix poisonous bait (rodenticide) into food that the rats like to eat.
Some have an immediate effect, while others do not have an immediate effect and take effect after the rat has eaten them several times without realizing it.
*Some mice are very wary and may not eat the poisonous bait.
To allow the animals to get used to the poisonous bait, leave the area as it is for a few days.
It is also effective to leave only bait in the area where you place the poisoned bait for the first few days, or to mix bait or peanut butter into the poisoned bait.
If you notice any signs of eating, add more until the mice are gone.
Warfarin-based rodenticides are used to kill rodents by feeding them several times to allow the poison to accumulate. Because the poison causes them to lose their eyesight, they tend to die in bright places.
Some brown rats (super rats) are resistant to coumarin and warfarin poisons. Please use poison bait designed for super rats.
There are various types of rodenticides: solid ones that are easy to place in feeding areas, bags that are easy to carry back to the nest, and powder ones that are sprinkled along the path of the rodents so that they stick to their feet and bodies. Please choose the type according to the location where you will be placing the poison.

- Blocking rat passageways (physical control)
- Use rodent-proof putty or wire mesh to physically block rodent entry points.
The main entry points are vents, drains, door pockets, gaps in pipes, etc. If you cannot block the holes, you can scatter mouse spikes to warn them away.
・Rodent-proof putty : This putty is mixed with capsaicin and other repellent ingredients. It has a nasty taste when chewed.
When installing the product, the repellent will adhere to your hands, so please wear vinyl gloves. If any of the repellent adheres to your hands, wash them thoroughly with soap.
- Mouse-proof boards : Boards made of metal or hard resin that mice cannot chew are attached to entry points to prevent them from entering.
・Rodent-proof wire mesh : Install wire mesh with mesh that mice cannot pass through. It is ideal for places that require air flow, such as ventilation openings. Since it is flexible, you can also roll up the wire mesh and stuff it into pipes to prevent mice from entering through the pipes.
- Repellent tape and paint : Contains ingredients such as capsaicin that give off an unpleasant taste when chewed. When used on electrical wiring, it prevents breaks caused by chewing.
*Rats will test bite weakly to see what they can chew. Test bites can be prevented by wrapping the repellent tape twice or three times.
Please note that if you touch the product, the repellent will adhere to your hands. If it does adhere to your hands, wash it off thoroughly with soap.
*If you block all the passageways when there are rats inside the house, the rats will have nowhere to go and will end up in other places. Please carry out the work after driving away the rats.
*Please be careful not to cover the opening with cardboard or thin wood as they may be chewed.

- Notes on exterminating rats
- Please be careful not to let children or pets eat poisonous bait by mistake.
If you have used traps or poisoned bait to exterminate mice, be sure to dispose of them as soon as possible.
If left unattended, mites may multiply. (Please be especially careful in the summer.)
Please be aware that if a rat is cornered or stressed, it may bite people.
